![]() (First I tried to make the hole with a twist drill but the filter material just wound up around the drill.) To make a tight fitting hole for the nipple in the air filter I ended up using a small carving chisel. Also make sure you clean out all plastic particles left from the drilling. Be sure to close the carburetor valve when drilling to keep any loose particles from getting in. ![]() I removed the corner with first a small pilot hole drill and then a larger drill. ![]() You will need some vacuum gauges to do this, look it up on youtube, lots of info available. For my generator I had to remove a corner of a plastic plate behind the air filter so that the installed feed tube will allow a direct spray to the carburetor input. If those check out and you know your carbs are clean, sync your carbs! There is a specific procedure for each bike, for I4s you usually sync the 2 right to each other, then the 2 left, then the all four together. Make sure carb boots are not dried and cracking, make sure sealing o-rings are all in good shape. If revs hang up and don't come back down immediately, check for air leaks. Now that you have that out of the way, check to see what happens when you roll hard on the throttle and release. If all of these check out, your throttle should snap back when you release. Check cable routing, make sure its not getting bent in any weird ways. Also check to make sure your throttle grip isn't rubbing up against anything causing it to return slowly. ![]() Great to hear the update, its always a great feeling when a bike fires to life after sitting dead for a while!įor hanging throttle adjust the play on your cables, both should have a little play, if they are too tight they will snag and cause a "sticky" feeling on the grip. In that case, fuel needs to flow as the engine is being cranked over by the starter motor. Some bikes (like the old carbed Ducati Monsters) use a vacuum membrane fuel pump that only operates as the engine is spinning. Otherwise, the jets and passages in the carburetor are all clogged, and it needs a proper cleaning and adjustment (is the float valve height adjusted properly? it is possible that it is closed at all times, if someone bent it during cleaning -never rely on the "dry" adjustment as in most manuals, it's way better if you actually fit a clear hose on the float bowl and check how high the level comes on the hose, the "dry" adjustment is only exact if the floats are definitely not bent in any other way than at the needle, but someone might have bent it in some other way and made those measurements inaccurate).Īre the spark plugs dry after cranking it over?īy the way, this is if you have an electronic fuel pump like most bikes. If that does not happen, something is clogged/not functioning between the fuel tank and the carburetor (either bad fuel lines, faulty fuel pump, or clogged fuel filter if it has one, could also be a bad fuel tap or the exhaust can get so rusted that it blocks up the fuel line/fuel tap completely). Fuel should flow out, and stop if you push the float valve up. Remove a float bowl and turn ignition on. The idle is bouncing a bit and the throttle is sticky, it takes like 2 seconds to fall back to idle.Īll i should have to do is tinker a bit with things and i should get it running smoothly.įuel is not getting to or through the carbs. I took the carbs off and ajusted the floats and played with the fuel mixture screw a little bit, put them back on and it fired up. I'm at the end of my wits and I'm about ready to sell the thing or take it to a shop. So far I've purchased two new batteries, drained fuel and repalced with fresh fuel, new oil and filter, cleaned carbs 3 times, replaced fuel pump and filter, replaced regulator/rectifier, 4 new spark plugs (NGK Iridium) Fuel is flowing from petcock to fuel pump and the pump is pumping into carbs (I've tested it with removal of fuel line for pump to carb and tried starting it and fuel pumps out) I've tested all four plugs against the frame for spark and i have spark. It fires up revs really high for one or two seconds then dies. Join us on Discord! Showing off Bikes or Gear? Click Here Looking for purchase advice?
